Vijay's Next

After all those news reports of Tamil directors defecting to the Telugu filmworld, we hear of a Telugu director coming to Tamil(never mind that he was a Tamil actor before that!). Prabhu Deva is going to direct Vijay's next film, a remake of Mahesh Babu's recent release Pokiri. It does seem like a strange choice considering Prabhu Deva's resume as a director but the report also says that he stepped in after a few leading Tamil directors turned down Vijay.

It looks like the failure of Aadhi really shook Vijay up. The actor, who was having a dream run since Tirumalai with every film being called a hit, was finally brought back down to earth as Aadhi became a colossal flop. After resolving money issues with the distributors, he took an inordinately long time to decide on his next film. He dropped three big projects - Puli with S.J.Suryah, Murasu with Muthuvagidu(Perarasu's brother) and Thangam, with one of Dharani's assistant directors - after toying with the ideas for a while. While the first 2 were dropped due to issues between Vijay and the directors on the scripts, he dropped the last one after its Telugu original Bangaram, directed by Dharani, flopped. But it looks like he still has confidence in remakes!

Like Vijay, Prabhu Deva is coming off a flop as a director too. After hitting box-office gold with Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, a superhit, Pournami, his second outing, has turned out to be a big flop. So after two Telugu romantic films with lesser heroes, he is going to direct a Tamil, masala film with one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars. Quite a change!

Pokiri is supposed to be a freemake of the Al Pacino-Johny Depp starrer Donnie Brasco, where an undercover cop infiltrates a mafia gang. Ofcourse the basic story has been spiced up with enough masala ingredients. Though it didn't receive many glowing reviews, it is supposed to be a stylish, good entertainer and Mahesh Babu's performance has come in for a lot of praise. It does sound like an interesting project and now its upto Prabhu Deva to churn out a hit for Vijay...

You haven't mentioned anywhere that "Pokiri" has already been termed a 'superhit' in the Telugu trade. As long as PD doesn't make a faithful remake and tries to cater largely to Vijay fans, Vijay is guaranteed to have a super hit this Deepavali (but, if indeed Mr. Sivaji shows up to give him nightmares!).. But never fear, as is always the case with all of Shankar's movies, they never release on festival dates.. they either come a few days before or a few days after.. never on the actual festival date. But then, this is a Rajini film we are talking about. Our Thalaivar revels in releasing his films on festival days and so does AVM!..

Vijay.. Prabhudeva.. beware!..

Vijay is taking more caution nowadays in selecting his films. For morethan 5 months he wasn't in shooting.

If again this film, release on Diwali, with Sivaji and Bheema, Vijay should take care to release his film.

Lingusamy is a proved action director, made more expectation for Bheema. I dont think its nice idea, to release this on Diwali. This Vikram will get more chance to get a hit over Vijay, which is in reverse when Maaja, Sivakasi released last week

They better do a decent job "freemaking" Donnie Brasco, which I thought was a compelling gangster movie, with Al Pacino at the peak of his powers. The way Pacino handled the last few scenes was such a contrast to his usual flamboyant style. It was an exercise in subtlety and nuances...mastttterful performance indeed. btw, who's playing the Al Pacino role and who's playing the Johnny Depp role in this Vijay movie??

Pokiri will have to be adjusted to make it suitable for Vijay fans. Like what Dharani did with Gilli. Moreover, Mahesh is an excellent actor. Vijay has been surviving on antics for the last 15 years. So there is a necessity to change personality of the hero as well.

Beyond that, the reason for Pokiri's success has to do with the larger Andhra market, great opening due to Mahesh's last hit, the lack of any competition, etc.

And yes, Pournami is a flop.

Kajan.. 15 years?.. who Vijay?.. You have to be kidding me. His first movie as a full-fledged hero, Rasigan came out in 1994. By that measure, he's only been around for about 12 years now.. giving him credit for 15 is too much! :-) ;-).. We'll wait to give him that due credit in 2009, shall we?..

Well this one is planned to take on Rajnikanth's Sivaji during Diwali, the last time these two clashed with Chandramukhi and Sachien we all know what happened, let us wait and see.

Suddenly Prabhu deva seems to be a sought after director?!

sandya, i think vijay's first movie as a hero was Naalaiya Theerpu...that came out in '92, if i'm rite...gotta check with Film News Anandan :)

Actually Ram, I didn't realize that Naalaiya Theerpu was a solo acting debut film for Vijay. I had it confused with Senthoora Pandi, which was his second film (but with Vijaykanth in the lead!).

Even with a 1992 debut in Naalaiya Theerpu, that still makes it only 14 years.. Vijay sir-oda 15 years comes only next year.. why not wait, especially since so many of us are still nay-sayers when it comes to him? ;-) :-)

sandya, there's apparently very little chance of 'sivaji' making it to theaters this yr. so vijay will have only 'bheema' to go up against :) much better than going up against 'sivaji' or 'dasaavathaaram'!!

skanda, another 'aadhi'?! vijay will be hoping its another 'gilli' :)

ram, depp's role is ofcourse vijay's. and i believe prakashraj plays the gang leader i.e. pacino's role...

vic, read somewhere that 'pournami' was a damp squib at the BO...

Balaji, the Sivaji puja was held in November '05 and they had started shooting in December itself. I honestly think that they will release the film this year... It's a lot of money invested and a lot of hype already generated without even knowing very much about the film. I fear that the longer they take, might start working against the film.. as was the case with both Boys and Anniyan. If not Deepavali, I do think, they may target a date in November or December this year. I don't think they will wait till Pongal.

If track records speak well for this project, neither Rajini nor AVM (unlike Shankar!) like to drag out projects no matter how much is at stake!.. They may work out a deal with both Bheema and the Pokiri remake (whatever the title maybe!) to keep those two from facing any losses in the Deepavali race and steer clear of the release dates of those two films. I really can't shake the feeling that Sivaji will not wait up to Pongal 2007.

there was some rumour that stalin's son is gonna produce vijay's next movie. is it true?

Sandhya,
Oru nalla number poda vidamaadeengala? Yeah, I know that he entered the industry in '92 with Nalaya Theerpu.

And I too believe Shivaji will come out this year. Dragging it and overhyping it will just make it bite dust at the box office as expectations will have become great by then.

Personally, I have low expectations for Prabhudeva. That is because NVNV was backed by MSRaju. I have my doubts about how much of the work is Raju's and how much is Prabudeva's. Raju is known to be at the head of everything.

Vijay cant be compared to mahesh.
Pokiri is such a nice movie n it wont suit vijays image. And may be like gilli, he changes few scenes with double meanings and okkadu was a decent movie compared to gilli. Mahesh rocks vijay sucks

Pokiri is not a great movie . It happends to be a hit because of Mahesh. First of all, Mahesh is handsome compared to Vijay. Girls just oogle at Mahesh. Me and friends would never go out with Vijay. Pokiri should be done by someone else in tamil. Only then we can enjoy it.

Vijay cant be compared to mahesh. Mahesh is the best!Pokiri is such a nice movie n it wont suit vijays image. Vijay is ugly while Mahesh is sooo handsome!Mahesh rocks while Vijay totally sucks! N e way Pokiri is not a great movie . It happends to be a hit because of Mahesh. Vijay cannot match Mahesh's action skills in Pokiri. Vijay copies mahesh too much. Vijay copies everyone that's y everyone that's not his fans r angry with him. Asin can't match illeana in Pokiri becuz Illeana has that young girl look and she can dance well but Asin kinda looks old now.
